Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is a laborer position that will perform simple and complex tasks associated with the operation, enhancement, and maintenance of land, facilities, and equipment at Hillview Recreation Area. This person will also assist with similar tasks on other Plymouth County Conservation land as needed.
Work Schedule: Non-standard work week plus weekend and holiday work required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These job duties are not to be construed as exclusive, or a specific list, and other duties may be required and assigned by the Conservation Director:
-Provides custodial services to all buildings and facilities.
-Operates light through heavy duty equipment to accomplish tasks.
-Completes routine facility and grounds maintenance in a timely manner.
-Maintains and repairs equipment and vehicles in a timely and cost efficient manner.
-Assists with the training and supervision of seasonal staff as directed.
-Participates in fish and wildlife management and habitat improvement projects.
-Conducts an integrated pest management program to manage noxious weeds.
-Purchases parts and maintenance items as directed.
-Uses chainsaws, loppers, and other tools to cut firewood, fall and trim trees, and shrubs
-Collects various fees and take reservations.
-Provides for the safety of area visitors.
-Makes purchases of materials and/or supplies as directed.
-Assists with the management of Hillview’s elk herd.
-Serves in various capacities for the departments prescribed fire program.
-Operates and/or assists in the operation of Hillview’s Tubing Hill.
-Works to complete various other tasks as assigned without direct supervision.
Required Skills & Knowledge at time of employment:
Possess the basic ability to operate a variety of highway and off-road vehicles and equipment
Possess the knowledge of basic custodial methods, construction methods, concrete work, electrical wiring schemes, and general vehicle and equipment maintenance.
Possess the ability to work without direct supervision, and possess the basic understanding and acceptance of the chain of command.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
High school diploma or GED; education or the equivalent in related work experience preferred. Valid Iowa motor vehicle operator's license and provide proof of insurance
Required within one (1) year of Employment:
Acquire and maintain CPR and Basic First Aid certifications
Acquire and maintain applicable Iowa Commercial Driver’s License (currently Class B).
Acquire and maintain Iowa Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License – Category 6
Complete and maintain currency in NWCG S-130/190, I-100 & L-180.

Ability to following a prescribed plan requiring the exercise of sound judgment. Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure and sort information, and must be detail oriented and possess good communication skills, including effectively and professionally communicate orally and in writing
Ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others within well established policies, procedures and standards, as well as the ability to explain instruction and information to the public in a professional manner, and skilled in motivating employees.
Establish effective working relationships with employees, board members, elected supervisors, and the public, ability to work effectively with people of all ages, and basic understanding and acceptance of the chain of command.
Judgment and Situational Reasoning Ability
Ability to use functional reasoning and apply rational judgment in dealing with the general public, and the ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations.
Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of pre-defined duties subject to frequent change.
Must have the ability to work independently and to exercise good judgment in making decisions in accordance with regulations, ordinances and law and to efficiently process data, records and reports regarding law enforcement operations and services.
Physical Requirements
Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing skilled movements required by the requirements of this classification.
Ability to exert light to arduous physical activity, climb stairs, crouch, stoop, and able to lift and carry heavy materials regularly and stand for long periods of time.
Environmental & Working Conditions
Includes field and workshop. Must be able to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions and exposure to injury is possible. Hazards include Custodial chemicals, Pesticides & Herbicides, Wild Land Fire, Light to heavy equipment use, and power tools (gas & electric)
Compliance
Compliance with the employee handbook, county policies, department work rules, and supervisor or elected official directives.

Qualifications
