The Sioux County Conservation Board (SCCB) and Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to join our team as a Cooperative Habitat Technician (CHT) at SCCB Oak Grove Station of the Great Lakes Big Sioux Sub-Unit (GLBSS).

This position will be under the supervisor of the Sioux County Board of directors with financial and supervisory support from the DNR.  The CHT will work with SCCB, DNR, and Pheasants Forever staff in primarily Sioux and Lyon Counties and secondarily in Plymouth, O’Brien and Osceola Counties.

The CHT will play a vital role in project administration, habitat management, facility development and maintenance, equipment operation and maintenance, wildlife population management, conservation education, etc., ensuring compliance with County and Department policies and regulations while contributing to the conservation and enhancement of natural resources. 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, or related field is required.
  • Previous experience in project administration, habitat management, and facility/equipment maintenance is preferred.
  • Knowledge of SCCB and DNR policies, safety regulations, and work procedures must be learned.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to obtain necessary certifications and training for job duties

Essential Functions

  • Function within a small work team to accomplish land management and supervise other staff.
  • Communicate with the public in a courteous and helpful manner.
  • Perform strenuous work and work under inclement conditions at times.
  • Knowledge of wildlife management principles and be able to apply them to management actions
  • Knowledge of basis federal, state, and county laws as they relate to wildlife resources.
  • Must be able to safely operate and maintain hand tools, motor vehicle and heavy equipment.
  • Must have basic knowledge of carpentry, electrical, and plumbing skills
  • Knowledge of basic computer programs including Microsoft, Adobe, and ESRI GIS software.
  • Must have a high standard of ethical conduct and integrity, be accountable, be highly productive, work well with others and have a team focus, have strong customer relations skills, and have strong wildlife technical, communication and computer skills.
  • Must be able to: possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, and obtain: a CDL (Class A with combination vehicle endorsement), Pesticide License (Core and Category 6); CPR/First Aid certification, Chainsaw Safety (S-212), and Firefighter Training certification (S-130/190, L-180, and field day).  

Annual Salary: $42,500 with annual performance raises.   Additional benefits include: IPERS, health and dental insurance, vacation and sick leave, paid holidays.  This is a limited term position with funding guaranteed through June 30, 2027 with the potential for position continuation.  This is an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to work with Sioux County Conservation Board and Iowa DNR Wildlife professionals to learn resource management skills and to advance his/her career.
