Position Description Summary:

The Park Ranger is a permanent, full time employee of Des Moines County Conservation that participates in the enforcement of the laws of the state as outlined in Chapter 350.5 of the Code of Iowa. The Park Ranger also participates in management and operations of parks and associated facilities. Under the direction of the department’s Operations Supervisor, the person in this position performs law enforcement, construction work, equipment and facility maintenance and repairs, and various programs related to the operation and maintenance of county lands and facilities.

Qualified applicants must possess, or be able to obtain the following certifications:

  • Peace officer certification from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (or other qualified state academy) and maintain continuous certification throughout employment as Park Ranger.
  • A valid Iowa Class A Commercial Drivers License with air brake endorsement.
  • A valid Iowa Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator Certification.
  • Minimum wildland fire training of NWCG S-130/190 certification.
  • NRA Range Officer certification.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certification.

Park Ranger Job Responsibilities, Duties and Requirements:

  • Perform public relations and law enforcement duties within the county park system.
  • Provide emergency response both within and outside county parks as needed.
  • Work closely with the local Sheriff’s office on patrol, training and enforcement efforts.
  • Build, repair and maintain park and conservation area facilities.
  • Perform general park maintenance tasks such as vegetation control, cleaning restrooms, removing debris and refuse.
  • Report/repair safety hazards.Provide assistance and information to the public and to park visitors.
  • Perform duties in rough terrain and in extreme hot or cold temperatures.
  • Operate and perform regular maintenance on trucks, tractors and light specialized equipment.
  • Supervise temporary work crews as needed.
  • Create and present programs as needed to park users for shooting range certifications, visitor safety, and proper area usage.
  • Inspect contracted services to ensure that work is completed in accordance with required standards.
  • Attend relevant workshops, meetings, and trainings related to park management and law enforcement.
  • Work most weekends and holidays through the busy park season (April-October).
  • Irregular hours and night shifts are common.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Experience, Abilities, and Skills:

  • Knowledge of state and local laws and ordinances and ability to enforce them accordingly.
  • Considerable knowledge of conservation principles and practices. 
  • Knowledge of construction principles including, but not limited to, carpentry, plumbing, concrete and masonry, electrical, and metal fabrication.
  • Extensive experience with hand and power tools.
  • Working knowledge of basic building maintenance principles. 
  • Knowledge of trees, shrubs, flowers, fish, reptiles, birds and other wildlife common to Iowa.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability and willingness to speak publicly, give presentations, and teach various courses.
  • Ability to operate and maintain all kinds of trucks, tractors, loaders, and specialized construction and agricultural machinery. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public. 
  • Basic knowledge of farming and proper land management techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of park, trail, and conservation area management principles.
  • Ability to interpret and effectively apply policy, procedure, rules and regulations relative to conservation and parks management.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply laws relative to enforcement procedures.
  • Knowledge of, and willingness and ability to effectively use technology related to the position including personal computers, laptops, mobile devices and associated software. 

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

  • Annual wage: $40,929.66 – $47,069.11 depending on qualifications.
  • Required six-month probationary period.
  • Standard county health and life insurance benefits as well as uniform allowance.
  • FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Qualifications

A minimum of an Associates Degree with major coursework in natural resources, outdoor recreation, criminal justice or other applicable field plus some relevant field experience. Current ILEA certification desired but not required to qualify.
