Position Type: Internship (temporary/seasonal)

Schedule: May 1st through August 31st, 40 hours a week - Monday through Friday.

Compensation: $14.00/hour

Reports to: Fossil & Prairie Center Supervisor

Position Summary

Floyd County Conservation is seeking an intern to support Rockford Brick & Tile Archives-to-Access, a project focused on cataloging and preserving the Rockford Brick & Tile Company collection and expanding public access to local industrial, agricultural, and fossil-related history. The intern will help move a large portion of the collection from storage into PastPerfect, a museum-quality collections management system with public access functionality, strengthening interpretation at the Fossil & Prairie Center and supporting regional heritage tourism.



Key Responsibilities

Catalog and document historical items using PastPerfect (object records, photos/documents, metadata entry).

Assist with organizing and rehousing materials for long-term preservation (basic archival handling and storage practices).

Digitally process select materials for improved access (scanning/photographing as appropriate; file naming and organization).

Help prepare content for public access through PastPerfect’s online portal, making the collection searchable and usable by visitors and researchers.

Contribute to an interactive visitor experience by helping select and organize materials for a touchscreen or other digital interpretation (as time allows).

Maintain clear progress tracking and provide periodic updates to staff.

Desired Qualifications

Interest in public history, museum studies, archives, library science, anthropology, education, agriculture history, geology, or related fields.

Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently on structured tasks.

Comfort working with computers and learning new software (training provided).

Ability to handle fragile historic materials with care and follow archival best practices (training provided).

Experience with scanning, digital file organization, metadata, or photography is a plus.

Professionalism, curiosity, and willingness to collaborate with staff and community partners.
Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.

Physical/Work Environment

Work takes place primarily indoors at the Fossil & Prairie Center with occasional light lifting (boxes/materials) and periods of standing or sitting while processing items.
