Description

Under the direct supervision of the Palo Alto County Conservation Director, the Park Technician will work closely with the Operations Supervisor and Director to carry out all aspects of Palo Alto County Conservation Boards goals.  These aspects include tree removal, prairie restoration, wetland management, timber management, prescribed fire, janitorial, park maintenance, and managing PACCB campground.  

 

Major job responsibilities and duties:

Assists in maintenance and management of parks, wildlife areas, and any other assigned areas.  Must be able to work with minimal direct supervision, assist in prescribed fire, work in all-weather environments, operate heavy equipment, identify invasive species & develop management strategies, and work closely with seasonal & full-time employees.

 

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

The Park Technician will need be able to apply knowledge and common sense to achieve work objectives.  Abilities include operating heavy equipment, power tools, ATV’s, fire equipment, radios, sprayers, and chainsaws.  This position will need to complete projects in a timely manner without compromising the quality of work.  Must be able to train & supervise seasonal staff, communicate clearly with public and staff, lift 50 pounds routinely, work in all-weather environments, and prioritize workloads.  This position will require a valid Iowa driver’s license, Iowa Pesticide Applicator license category 2, 5, and 6, CPR, and Wildland Fire Courses S130/190.  Iowa pesticide applicators license and S130/190 are required within 1 year of employment.

 

Work Schedule:

April to Labor Day

Monday through Friday 7:30am to 3:30pm

  • Some weekend hours required

Labor Day to April

Monday through Thursday 7am to 5pm

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate degree or bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, ecology, forestry, agriculture or a closely related field. 2 years of closely related fieldwork is preferred.
