POSITION SUMMARY
The Natural Resource Manager is a full-time, permanent position with Marshall County Conservation Board(MCCB). The person in this position is under the general supervision of the Executive Director and will function as a Natural Resource Manager for all Marshall County Conservation recreational areas, trails, and wildlife areas. The non-standard work schedule could include nights, weekends, and holidays.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
o Performs routine maintenance and monitoring of wildlife areas, recreation areas, facilities, and equipment.
o Performs various tasks connected to the operation and maintenance of green infrastructure within MCCB Areas.
o Review, develop, and implement short- and long-term management plans for MCCB wildlife management areas and portions of recreational areas.
o Performs natural resource management, including timber stand improvement, prairie management, and wetland restoration.
o Participates in the planting and maintenance of native plant communities.
o Treats and/or removes invasive species.
o Operates and maintains machinery, tools, and equipment used to maintain recreational areas, including grounds, signs, fences, and trails.
o Reports problems with facilities, grounds, or equipment to the Operations Supervisor.
o Coordinates with the Operations Supervisor/Park Ranger and Maintenance Technicians, overseeing and directing seasonal workers and volunteers.
o Participates in flora and fauna field surveys.
o Provides public support within recreational areas, trails, and wildlife areas as needed, supplying general information about park and recreational opportunities and first aid and emergency assistance as required.
o Attends classes and seminars to keep current with changing practices in conservation.
o Assist with environmental education programs, including but not limited to hunter safety education, fishing, and large public events.
INCIDENTAL JOB DUTIES
o Any other duties as assigned or required by the Executive Director.
o Assist the general public with questions, concerns, and inquiries.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
o Knowledge of local plants, animals, and habitats.
o Knowledge of prairie, woodland, and wetland management techniques.
o Knowledge and the ability to apply natural resources management techniques, including, but not limited to, prescribed burning, tree felling, mowing, and chemical herbicides.
o Physically able to use, repair, and maintain trucks, tractors, native plant drill, augers, tree planters, tree trimmers, chainsaws, boats, motors, sprayers, and various power tools.
o Knowledge of invasive species in Iowa and their treatment.
o Knowledge of planting practices for native grasses and forbs, native trees and shrubs, and food plots.
o Ability to effectively communicate and to use discretion and independent judgment.
o Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
o Ability to regularly interact with park visitors, including hunters, anglers, campers, picnickers, hikers, etc.
o Ability to interact with the Executive Director, fellow employees, and volunteers.
o Ability to work without direct supervision.
o Ability to operate standard office equipment, including basic computer literacy.
o A substantial amount of physical effort and manual dexterity to climb/descend ladders, frequent walking, constant standing, kneeling, or squatting, often on ungraded terrain.
o Ability to create and interpret maps.
o Ability to communicate effectively with the public regarding forest, prairie, and wetland management.
o Physical ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull objects weighing up to 75 pounds.Qualifications
The applicant must have a 4-year degree in the natural sciences or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. The applicant must also possess a valid driver’s license.
