Description
Johnson County Conservation provides no-cost education programs to thousands of youth and hundreds of adults each year through immersive field trips, public events, festivals, summer camps, wilderness treks, and community partnerships. The Education & Outreach Summer VISTAs (2) will assist in expanding our education outreach with community partner groups serving low-income youth and families, as well as increase our free programing a Johnson County Conservation sites. By increasing our outreach and education services, we aim to reduce summer learning loss and enhance summer enrichment opportunities for Johnson County youth. We also aim to increase access to the health and wellness benefits of outdoor recreation in our community for all Johnson County residents. By engaging more community members in conservation education and outdoor recreation we are building environmental stewards of today and into the future.
Anticipated service schedule:
This is a full-time, temporary (10-weeks) position. Hours are typically 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, except for any holidays or office closures. Some weekend and evening hours will also be required. Most service will be done at Kent Park, or other Johnson County Conservation operations centers or properties. This position starts on June 1, 2026 and ends on August 9, 2026
Member Duties:
The VISTA member will facilitate outdoor recreation and conservation education programs ranging from guided hikes to wildlife education to kayaking and paddle boarding programing. This position will help support new partnership and expansive partnership development, serving under-resourced communities as well as general public populations. The VISTA member will have the chance to learn about multiple public conservation areas and provide programs at multiple sites throughout the summer. The VISTA member will provide marketing support through the development of program promotions, informational videos and social media content, and through other communications channels.
Qualifications
Some College Hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US national, or Lawful Permanent Resident Must have a valid Iowa driver's license. Experience in environmental education, outdoor recreation, and youth development.
