Educational Rain Garden

SEP 28, 2021

An Educational Rain Garden is being finished up at the Conservation Center in Moorehead Park!

An Educational Rain Garden, or ERG for short, is being finished up at the Conservation Center in Moorehead Park! Over the past few years, Moorehead Park has experienced damages on the roads and parking lots due to rain and snow melt events. Water running down hill, on bare ground, leads to severe erosion and unwanted sediment build-up. The ERG was designed to: collect water, reduce sediment from building up in unwanted areas, improve water infiltration, AND be an educational tool for awesome pollinators and beautiful Iowa prairie plants! This is a bio-engineered project to help the department accomplish necessary management objectives. Hopefully, this project will inspire local citizens to build their own rain gardens in town. Collective efforts to build rain gardens would support declining pollinator populations and improve water quality. What's not to love about that?!
