Youth & Adult Overnight Trips

Naturalists with Clinton, Dubuque, and Jackson County Conservation Departments are partnering again in 2023 for some overnight adventure trips!!

 

Adult Voyageur Paddling Trip June 26-28, 2023  

Calling all active and adventurous adults for a 2-day, 3-night paddling expedition in 29-foot Voyageur canoes on the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers. In addition to paddling, there will opportunities for hiking, swimming, and fishing. We will be camping on sandbars along the river. Each participant will bring their own food, water, and any other essentials. Each of the two voyageur canoes can hold 7 people, for a maximum of 14 adults for the trip. Some gear, including dry bags, will be provided. A mandatory meeting for all participants will be held Sunday, June 11 from 1:00-5:00 PM at Rock Creek Marina and Campground near Camanche, Iowa. Participants will have a chance to paddle in the voyageur canoes, learn more about the trip, review the packing list, check-out gear to borrow, and meet other participants. Trip will begin by meeting at our ending point in Clayton, Iowa at 10:00 AM on Monday, June 26. Leaving some cars there, we will carpool to our starting point near Boscobel, Wisconsin. We will paddle approximately 35 miles over the three days. We will arrive at our ending point late afternoon on Wednesday and shuttle people back to their cars in Boscobel.

Youth Ice Age Backpacking Trip July 11-13, 2023

Youth ages 12-17 are invited to participate in a backpacking trip along the Ice Age Trail in Chippewa County, Wisconsin. Youth will hike 10+ miles of the Ice Age trail, carrying gear in a backpack, tent camping along the way, filtering water, cooking over stoves, and immersing themselves in the outdoors. Trip will be led by staff with Clinton, Dubuque, and Jackson County Conservation Departments. Backpacks, tents, food, cookstoves, and other gear will be provided. Youth will need to bring their own clothing, good hiking shoes, and other personal gear. A mandatory pre-trip meeting will be held Friday, July 7 from 9:00-Noon at the Hurstville Interpretive Center. At the meeting, participants will meet each other and the leaders, learn more about the gear we will be using (tents, water filters, cook stoves), review the packing list, select a backpack to take home to pack their things, and ask questions. The trip will begin on the morning of Tuesday, July 11. Youth can meet a Naturalist at select locations in Clinton, Jackson & Dubuque Counties. We’ll then all meet up at Swiss Valley Nature Center near Dubuque to hand out group gear and finalize packing. We will travel to Chippewa County, Wisconsin, and hike to our first campsite. Day two, after breakfast and packing up, we will backpack to our next campsite. Thursday morning, we will hike to our vehicles and drive home.
