Grundy County Lake
Discover Grundy County Lake in Dike
Created by the IADOT in 1999, the lake was originally dug to supply material needed for the construction of the nearby highway 20. In August of 2002, the site was transferred to Grundy County, and additional property was purchased from the IADOT using Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) funds.
In July 2003, the park was opened to the public, and in 2008 an asphalt trail around the lake was constructed with cooperation from the city of Dike. This trail was built to honor Phil and Jodi Kruger, a newly married couple who passed away in a car accident just three months after their wedding.
Improvements on the land have continued with camping and habitat development, including the planting of trees, native grasses and flowers, and wetland restoration. Recreation opportunities at the park include fishing, electric motor boating, picnic areas with shelters, a paved trail around the lake and leading into the city of Dike, and a playground in the campground area. The lake is stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, walleye, and channel catfish. Shelter houses may be rented for a 5-hour period for $20 through contacting Grundy County Conservation at least 72 hours before the desired date.
The campgrounds include 60 modern sites with water and electrical hookups up to 50 amps. Pull through sites are available for larger rigs, and a dump station, a shower house, and restrooms are all on site. Registration is “first come, first served” (no reservations) and camping envelopes and payment instructions are present at the campground. Camping fees are $20 a night for all sites for up to 14 days. Firewood is also available for purchase at the park. The campground is closed during the winter months.
