Attracting and Rearing Butterflies

Hartman Reserve Nature Center, Black Hawk County

Sunday, March 19, 2023

The butterfly display at Hartman Reserve has been a popular seasonal exhibit for visitors to see all stages of life for certain species of moths and butterflies. The exhibit is carefully managed for Hartman by David Thompson, who has over 50 years of experience in rearing and studying our native Iowa butterflies and moths. He rears many of the larger species each year from the eggs he produces in his insectary. He also provides free eggs each year to Iowa nature centers and to their visitors. David will present his ideas for the best ways to attract butterflies to your yard, including how to select the best nectar plants for them and the best larval food plants for the females to lay eggs on. He will also explain how you can raise butterflies and moths from any eggs or caterpillars that you might find! No registration is necessary and there is no cost to attend and learn.
