Monarch Butterfly Tagging - Citizen Science Opportunity

AUG 29 2026 11:00 AM

Fontana Park , Buchanan County

Event Summary

PLEASE NOTE THIS EVENT WILL NOT BE AT FONTANA PARK.

Join a naturalist to learn about the incredible migration and life cycle of the monarch butterfly! Participants will begin with a short discussion about monarch biology, migration, and the challenges these amazing insects face throughout their journey. Afterward, the group will head outdoors to search for and catch monarchs for tagging. The goal is to safely catch and tag as many monarchs as possible before they continue their migration south. This long-running citizen science project, coordinated through the University of Kansas, has been helping researchers track monarch migrations since the 1990s. By participating, you'll contribute valuable data that helps scientists better understand and conserve this iconic species.
