Discover Fix Wildlife Refuge in Charles City

Fix Wildlife Area is a woodland preserve located on 130th Street north of Colwell in northeastern Floyd County. Recent habitat-management work removed dense underbrush and selected trees, opening the forest canopy and allowing more sunlight to reach the woodland floor. This encourages the growth and spread of native plants while improving habitat for birds, deer, and other wildlife.

The preserve features a small stream, fallen logs, mature trees, and a variety of spring wildflowers and woodland plants, including bluebells, phlox, violets, Jack-in-the-pulpit, ostrich ferns, and gooseberry bushes.

Although there are no established trails, visitors may explore the natural terrain and enjoy excellent birdwatching, especially during migration. The area provides a quiet refuge where wildlife can find food, shelter, nesting areas, and space to raise their young.
