OWLS (Older Wiser Livelier Souls) - Taming the Red Buffalo: Prairie Fire on the Great Plains

Event Summary

Taming the Red Buffalo: Prairie Fire on the Great Plains by Dr. Julie Courtwright, Assoc. Professor of History at Iowa State University

Prairie fire is a fundamental ecological and historical force within the grasslands of North America.  Indigenous peoples used fire to maintain the grassland, but when Americans moved onto the Great Plains they managed it differently, an action that had (and continues to have) significant consequences for the prairie/plain ecosystem.  A cultural as well as an ecological force, prairie fire is an important part of prairie/plain identity and history.

Doors open at 10:00AM for coffee/tea and chatting. Program runs 10:30-11:30AM.
