Paddle Event from Washta to Walling Access
AUG 08 2026 9:00 AM
Event Summary
Interested in paddling a stretch of Iowa's newest Water Trail? Join us to experience 5 miles of the Little Sioux River as it winds its way along the stretch of the Inkpaduta Canoe Trail between Washta and Walling River Access. As the river meanders north of Correctionville, a mix of woodland and open countryside can be viewed. Paddlers will need to navigate around some deadfalls and along riffles and should have some paddling experience.
What to bring: Bring water, lunch and snacks, insect repellent and sunblock; and for comfort, consider wearing quick drying clothing (not cotton), a hat/cap and/or sunglasses to protect you from the sun, and water shoes (or, old sneakers that you don’t mind getting wet and muddy). Sandals and flip-flops are not ideal—closed-toed footwear is the best way to protect your feet.
Where: Woodbury County: Washta to Walling River Access ~ 5 miles. Meet at the Washta River Access at 9:00 am to offload canoes/kayaks and gear. We will drive all our vehicles to the takeout (Walling River Access) and return to the put-in (Washta) in as few vehicles as possible—often referred to as the “shuttle”.
Trip Lead: Shelby County Naturalist Christina Roelofs will be leading the paddle. Christina has been a Naturalist for 25 years. She’s shared between the Shelby County Conservation Board and the Iowa DNR. She enjoys teaching people about a wide variety of nature topics including paddling. I grew up in Northwest Iowa. I have loved being outdoors my whole life. I grew up camping and fishing. I have been paddling since I was a kid. I love to kayak and kayaking on rivers is one of my favorite things to do.
