The McCarthy Wildlife Area is managed by the Dubuque County Conservation Board and is open to public hunting during state designated hunting seasons.  This 100 acre former cultivated row crop field was planted with native grasses and flowers in 2023.  The area contains a wetland, shelter belt, alfalfa field and various nesting structures placed around the area in order to attract as many different bird species as possible.

The McCarthy Wildlife Area is located on McCarthy Road, northwest of Bernard Iowa.
