Discover Mathers Woods in Nora Springs

Mather’s Woods is a peaceful 40-acre woodland located about one mile east of Nora Springs. A shaded loop trail of just over one mile winds through mature maple, basswood, oak, and walnut trees before reaching the banks of the Shell Rock River.

The area is especially beautiful during spring, when bluebells, spring beauties, Mayapples, phlox, Jack-in-the-pulpit, wild ginger, and other woodland wildflowers appear along the trail. As the tree canopy fills in, the woods become a cool, shaded retreat for hiking, nature study, and seasonal exploration.

Mather’s Woods is also an excellent destination for birdwatching, with opportunities to observe migrating songbirds, owls, pileated woodpeckers, and other woodland species. Visitors may also spot tree frogs, pollinating insects, and additional wildlife among the dense vegetation. Although the site is not a developed river access, hikers can reach the Shell Rock River for scenic views and possible shoreline fishing.
