Event Summary

Ready to leave the backyard behind? This camp is for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who want to master the skills of a true outdoorsman. We’re going beyond the basics, moving into the essential techniques needed to survive and thrive in the Iowa wilderness. This isn't just a day in the park—it's a crash course in self-reliance.

The Survival Skill-Set:Master the Flame: Forget the lighter fluid. Campers will learn advanced fire-starting techniques, including using flint and steel, and how to maintain a sustainable "all-night" fire regardless of the weather.

Basecamp Engineering: We’ll cover the science of site selection. Campers will learn how to pitch a tent, how to secure it, and even experiment with tarp shelters for minimalist camping.

The Backcountry Kitchen: Middle schoolers take the lead on the menu. We’ll move past snacks and into full meal prep—learning how to manage heat for Dutch oven baking and how to properly store food to keep local wildlife out of camp.

Navigation & Trekking: Put the GPS away. We’ll hit the trails for a challenging hike where campers will learn how to read maps, use a compass, and navigate by natural landmarks.

What You’ll Gain:Teamwork & Leadership: Many of our challenges, from tent-pitching races to fire-building contests, require communication and coordination.

Environmental Stewardship: We’ll practice strict "Leave No Trace" principles to ensure our favorite Iowa natural spots stay pristine for the next generation.
