Get certified as a Master River Steward!

Iowa Rivers Revival’s Master River Stewards Program is an eight-week comprehensive course co-sponsored by Prairie Rivers of Iowa, that focuses on riverine systems, including skills to paddle and navigate rivers, restoring aquatic habitat, improving water quality, and understanding policies related to floodplains, river protection, and restoration.

The Master River Stewards Program will build on a network of river experts in various partner agencies and organizations. It will help adult learners collaborate to protect and improve Iowa’s rivers, so current and future generations can enjoy these resources. 

Expectations. To become a Master River Steward you need to:

  • have an interest in river conservation and environmental issues and concerns
  • complete all 8 sessions, including small homework assignments
  • provide at least 32 hours of volunteer efforts after the training, usually done as a watershed group with other MRSP participants.
  • have a willingness to learn and share ideas with others

The eight week course will take place on the following dates/times:

  • 5/11/2017: 5:30-9:30PM: Introduction/Watersheds
  • 5/18/2017: 5:30-9:30PM: River Form and Function
  • 5/20/2017: 10AM-4PM: (Paddle Trip)  Navigating Iowa’s Waters and River Life 
  • 5/25/2017: 5:30-9:30PM: River Chemistry and Monitoring  
  • 6/1/2017: 5:30-9:30PM: Agricultural Production, Policies, and Iowa’s Rivers  
  • 6/8/2017: 5:30-9:30PM: Stream and Riparian Zones Restoration and Impacts on Fish and Wildlife  
  • 6/15/2017: 5:30-9:30PM: Review and Potential Projects Planning
  • 8/3/2017; 5:30-7:30 PM: Final Review Session

Please dress for the weather as each class will have an outside component.
