Wapello County Conservation is looking for a Seasonal Conservation Aide to assist with the maintenance of natural resources and recreational areas in Wapello County. 2024 Wapello County Conservation Seasonal Conservation Aide

Description:  The position available is to assist permanent staff with managing and maintaining 2,278 acres of parks, trails, prairies, wetlands, and forests in southeast Iowa. May also assist Naturalist with program preparation, materials, or presentations. Duties will include but are not limited to mowing, painting, litter pick-up, general carpentry, prairie maintenance, prescribed fire, and planting and pruning trees. Conservation Aides will also report and repair safety hazards. This position will work closely with the public providing them with information and offering assistance.  Maintain working relationships with other employees. Attend mandatory safety trainings as well as staff and board meetings. Perform all related tasks as assigned. Work will involve but not be limited to the operation of tractors, chainsaws, lawnmowers, and power tools.  

Qualifications: Should be interested in or have a degree in one of the following fields: wildlife, biology, animal ecology, natural resource management, forestry, or related fields of study. Must be at least 18 years or older, have no felony convictions, and possess a current valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Able to pass an IOWA Criminal History Record Check.  Ability to routinely stand, walk, sit, kneel, stoop, balance, climb, and safely operate a wide variety of hand tools, power tools, mowers, or small tractors. Applicant must be able to lift up to 75 pounds, follow written and oral instructions, and work without supervision. Outdoor work could include contact with dust, dirt, chemicals, noise, severe weather conditions (extreme temperatures, humidity, wind, rain, and flood), and exposure to outdoor elements such as mosquitoes, ticks, various plants, pollens, and fungi. 

Work Schedule: The employment period is late February to late September (specific starting and ending dates are flexible depending on the applicant’s schedule). Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. with an average of 40 hours/week. Occasional weekend or evening hours may be required.   

Compensation: $15.00 per hour
