Natural Areas Management Intern Positions

Dates:  Program runs May 1 through September 15 (as school schedule permits)

 

Description:  Duties involve management of county parks under the Natural Resource Specialist and Conservation Technician to include but not limited to; tree and brush removal using chainsaws, brushcutters, other machinery, and hand labor; invasive species control using herbicide, hand labor, and other tools; implementation of prescribed fire as part of a crew; trail maintenance and sustainability.  Work duties are generally performed out of doors and in inclement weather.  Job duties require a considerable amount of physical activity, including walking, standing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, stooping and climbing. Employee must have the ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and possess the coordination and manual dexterity to handle tools and equipment involved in daily operations, maintenance, construction and repair tasks.  

 

Qualifications:  Must be at least 18 years of age and attending or planning to attend college in the conservation / natural resource field. Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. 

 

Other:  Non-standard workweek that may include holidays, evenings and weekends. Professionalism and good public relations are essential, as is time management. Internships may qualify for college credit.  Job performance evaluations will be completed. 

 

Salary:  Pay will be $11.00 - $13.00 per hour depending on experience.  Some uniform provided.

 

Locations:  Pottawattamie County, Iowa, park and recreation areas:  Arrowhead Park, Narrows River Park, Hitchcock Nature Center, Botna Bend Park, Old Town Park, Farm Creek Public Wildlife Area, Wheeler Grove Conservation Area, Pheasants Forever Habitat Area and other smaller areas as assigned.
