Turn north off HWY 141 onto County Road P46. Proceed 1/2 mile into Dawson and turn east (right) on E. Railroad Avenue. East Railroad Avenue becomes 130th St. as you leave town. Follow the road about 1/2 mile and the road will turn to the north. The park entrance is found at the point where the road turns back east.
Located 1/2 mile northeast of Dawson, Sportsman Park has 40 acres of oak and hickory timber overlooking the North Raccoon River. You might enjoy fishing, hiking along the nature trails, picnicking or camping. There are two enclosed shelters with combination locks that are available for rent May 1 through October 31. Each shelter requires a damage deposit, which will be returned to you if there are no damages, plus a rental fee. Reservations are required by calling 515-465-3577.

Renovation of the campground at Sportsman Park is underway.
There will be tent camping only in the tent area. Sportsman Park remains open during this construction process for the rental of the cabins and shelters.

Operating Hours & Seasons
May 1 through October 31 camping, rented shelters, restrooms and entry gate are open daily 8am to 10pm. Restrooms will be open during this time.
November 1 through April 30, the entry gate will be open 8am to 5pm for day activities only. Shelters will not be open. Camping will be allowed in the months of November and April, only as conditions allow. The restrooms will remain closed; however, there will be a portable unit available in November and April.
