Twin Bridges Wildlife Area

Twin Bridges Wildlife Area is located 4.5 miles west of Colesburg in sections 2, 10 and 11 of Elk Township.

In 1969, Delaware County Conservation purchased 20.5 acres for a park with Elk Creek trout stream flowing through the property. This park was developed as a diversified recreation area for fishing, camping, picnicking and playground area.

Delaware County Conservation purchased an additional 119.0 acres in 1984 with assistance from the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. This wildlife area includes over a half mile of Elk Creek trout stream flowing from west to east. The upland area includes 86.0 acres of upland timber.

A 16.5-acre field on the stream bottom was planted to trees, with a trail established along the stream, which provides access for the IA DNR to stock trout in Elk Creek. Another 16.3-acre field on top of the hill along the south boundary was enrolled into the Conservation Reserve Program and planted to trees and native grasses in 1997.

The north facing slope of the wildlife area provides a unique environment for plant species with several endangered plants being identified along with the diversity of wildlife. This makes Twin Bridges Wildlife Area one of the more unique areas in Delaware County.
