Established by the Iowa Department of Transportation as a wetland mitigation site, Blue Flag adjoins the Great Western Trail. The area emphasizes constructed wetland in the lowland and reestablished prairie on the associated uplands.
Blue Flag is named for the Blue Flag Iris that can be found here. They are a perennial plant found in shallow water along the shoreline.

Follow 30th Ave South out of Cumming. Turn West on Clarke Street and South on 25th Ave. Blue Flag is 2 miles South of Clarke Street on 25th.
