Lodge - Horseshoe Falls
Horseshoe Falls Lodge opened in 1995, becoming the second enclosed lodge facility in Pinicon Ridge Park - joining the 1966 Woodpecker Lodge on Woodpecker Hill. It was built by Conservation Department staff, and is located in the former Horseshoe Falls Campground that was closed in the early 1990s. The name of the lodge comes from the nearby small waterfall along the Woodpecker Trail. A small limestone outcropping with a vertical drop of 4 feet or so received it's name from the local inhabitants in the mid-1900s as they would give tours of the scenic wooded hills and valleys along the Wapsipinicon River, passing by this diminutive waterfall on their travels.

Lodge - Woodpecker
Woodpecker Lodge is located on a scenic hill top in Pinicon Ridge Park - a regional destination just west of Central City, IA. Opened in 1966, this facility was accompanied by the Pinicon Ridge Dam, Observation Tower and Flying Squirrel Campground as the Conservation Department's major park developments of the mid-1960s. This was the first lodge available for reservations by the public on a year-round basis - and immediately became popular because of the adjacent lighted sledding hill - which, 40-some years later - still makes for great winter activity destination! It has been renovated several times over the past decade, with plans for additional work to be completed in 2009-2010. The unique triangular shape, and scenic vistas off the patios of this lodge serve only to enhance the lure to this location for historic family gatherings, youth group activities and neighborhood events.

OBSERVATION TOWER
Long a landmark for Pinicon Ridge Park, the 72' Woodpecker Hill Observation Tower has weathered nearly 4.5 decades and provided scenic views and lifetime experiences to hundreds of thousands of visitors since it was originally constructed in 1966. The main shaft of the tower was constructed by the former Link-Belt Speeder Company of Cedar Rapids in the mid-1960s - destined to become a crane in New York City harbor. Due to some construction mis-configuations - it never made the trip to New York and was acquired by the Linn County Conservation Board in early 1965.
A successful $1 million bond issue in 1965 funded many construction and expansion projects for the Linn County Park system, including: Woodpecker Lodge at Pinicon RIdge Park, the Observation Tower construction at Pinicon Ridge, land acquisition at Squaw Creek and Pinicon Ridge parks, and the construction of the Pinicon RIdge Dam on the Wapsipinicon River in Central City. The observation tower originally cost $19,000 to erect - with the stairwell and enclosure on the top constructed by a local manufacturing firm.
Due to liability concerns, the tower was closed for a couple of years in the mid-1990s. Several options were explored ,and a plan was crafted to renovate the landmark tower - giving it a new life for another 40+ years! The $150,000 project included a facelift, enclosing the previously open stairwell, and general structural maintenance on the 40-year-old facility. The tower re-opened in the late '90s for another long run of making memories for many folks.
The Pinicon Ridge Observation Tower is open to the public at no charge from early April thru early November each year, it is closed during the winter months. At 1,028 feet above sea level, it is one of the highest points in Linn County - and from the observation platform, one commands a wonderfully scenic view of the Wapsipinicon River valley and the adjoining countryside as far as the eye can see!
